A production report tells you what happened. An investigation asks why the result changed and what to check next. AI-assisted MES is useful when it can connect that question to the actual production records, measurements, and documents behind the answer.
Orenda combines local MES data with an AI workspace for machine questions, saved investigations, and reports. Start with a named machine and a clear question, then examine the sources used in the result.
What can a production team ask?
Useful questions are tied to a decision:
- Which stops contributed most to lost time on this shift?
- Did the latest run differ from comparable runs of the same product?
- What changed around a recorded maintenance intervention?
- Which section of the machine manual relates to this alarm?
The available records determine which questions can be answered. A missing quality result or an unexplained counter reset should be visible in the finding.
How does an investigation work?
Select the machine, period, and task. The workspace uses the data and document sources allowed for that machine and user. Production records provide runs, stops, quantities, products, and other installed operational data. Historian measurements add readings over time. Manuals and maintenance records add the equipment context.
The result can include findings, source references, and proposed next checks. Open the cited measurement or document passage to see what supports the answer. Save the investigation when the team needs to return to it.
Keep the question close to the data
Suppose a packaging line shows lower OEE on the latest shift. This is an illustrative example.
First compare availability, performance, and quality. If availability accounts for the change, inspect the stop records rather than asking for a generic efficiency plan. Then compare the same product and operating conditions. A change in product mix can explain a different rate without implying a machine fault.
The OEE calculation guide shows how the factors work. Reliable source definitions make the investigation easier to interpret.
Use machine documents alongside production records
A manual can explain an alarm, maintenance interval, component, or inspection procedure. Link the right version to the machine. Orenda processes and indexes these documents locally so relevant passages can be located.
A document answer and a production finding serve different purposes. The first should point to the passage it used. The second should point to the measured period and records. Keeping both visible lets the engineer work through the explanation.
Move from an answer to ongoing work
The workspace keeps investigations and reports so a conversation can continue. Teams can schedule repeat checks and export HTML or PDF reports. Where the relevant maintenance features are installed and authorized, a reviewed finding can continue into a tracked maintenance action.
This is useful during handover: the next engineer can read the question, open the supporting evidence, and see what has already been checked.
Predictive Maintenance applies this workflow to changes in machine behavior, maintenance history, and the next service decision.
Where does the analysis run?
The Box stores original documents and local machine records. Document preparation and indexing run locally. For hosted AI analysis, selected authorized measurements and document excerpts are sent through the configured inference service. The standard hosted setup does not require each customer to supply an OpenAI API key or choose a model.
A customer-managed inference endpoint is another deployment option. In either setup, the installed applications, approved data access, available sources, and inference connection determine what the workspace can use. Local MES operation is separate from hosted inference availability.
What should a first evaluation include?
Use one machine and a real recurring question. Check the underlying counts, states, units, and timestamps. Add the relevant manual and any available service history. Run the investigation with the person who normally handles that task.
Evaluate the result against the sources: can the engineer find the evidence, understand what changed, and choose a useful next check? Record the follow-up so the next investigation can use the outcome.
Orenda Box supplies the local data and application layer. Orenda MES supplies production context. The AI workspace connects those records to an investigation your team can inspect.
